SMS Mill Services, LLC ("SMS") is a leader in the steel mill services industry.SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions that focus on adding value and achieving operational and environmental goals. Our range of services includes, but is not limited to, scrap yard management, finished and semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics and transportation support, and slag processing.
SMS is seeking an experienced and results-driven General Manager to lead operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor facility in Indiana. Reporting directly to the Regional Operations Director, this highly visible leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operation, including safety, financial performance, customer satisfaction, operational excellence, workforce engagement, and strategic growth. The successful candidate will balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational execution while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.
Responsibilities:
- Provide overall leadership and direction for the Burns Harbor operation, ensuring alignment with company objectives, customer expectations, and operational goals.
- Champion a safety-first culture and maintain accountability for all environmental, health, safety, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Maintain full responsibility for the site's financial performance, including profit and loss management, budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and achievement of financial targets.
- Develop and execute strategic and operational plans that drive business growth, operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and long-term sustainability.
- Lead, develop, and mentor a team of salaried and unionized hourly employees, fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, teamwork, and high performance.
- Partner with mill leadership to identify opportunities to improve service delivery, productivity, efficiency, and overall customer value.
- Drive operational performance through the establishment and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring achievement of safety, quality, productivity, and financial objectives.
- Provide leadership in labor relations matters, including contract administration, employee relations, workforce planning, and conflict resolution.
- Ensure effective utilization of personnel, equipment, and resources to maximize operational efficiency and profitability.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives, promoting innovation, process optimization, and a culture of operational excellence.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable company policies, customer requirements, legal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Operations Management, Industrial Management, or a related field; MBA preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in heavy industrial, steel, manufacturing, mining, logistics, or related environments.
- Demonstrated success managing large-scale operations with full P&L accountability.
- Experience leading unionized workforces and administering collective bargaining agreements.
- Proven ability to drive safety, operational performance, customer satisfaction, and financial results.
- Strong strategic planning, leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced industrial environment.
