Maintenance Superintendent
SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Cuyahoga Heights is seeking a motivated, safety focused, and hands-on Maintenance Superintendent. This role will support daily operations in a steel mill scrap environment. The Maintenance Superintendent will oversee day-to-day maintenance activities, establish repair priorities, troubleshoot complex mechanical issues, and maintain accountability for equipment reliability, maintenance costs, safety, and workforce performance.Position Summary
The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for leading and actively participating in the maintenance and repair of heavy mobile equipment, industrial machinery, and supporting systems used in SMS operations. This is a hands-on leadership position that requires the manager to work alongside maintenance employees while planning repairs, coordinating preventive maintenance, managing parts and vendors, and ensuring equipment is available to support safe and efficient production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Hands-On Maintenance and Repair
- Perform and assist with troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment and industrial machinery.
- Work directly alongside mechanics, technicians, and operations employees during equipment breakdowns, major repairs, and scheduled maintenance.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel engine problems.
- Perform or oversee repairs involving engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, welding, fabrication, and related components.
- Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns and help restore equipment to service safely and efficiently.
Maintenance Leadership
- Direct, supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance employees.
- Assign daily work based on equipment condition, operational priorities, employee qualifications, and available resources.
- Provide clear direction at the beginning of each shift and monitor the completion and quality of assigned work.
- Hold maintenance employees accountable for safety, attendance, productivity, workmanship, housekeeping, and compliance with company policies.
- Develop, implement, and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Ensure inspections, services, lubrication, and preventive maintenance tasks are completed on schedule.
- Review maintenance records and equipment history to identify recurring failures and reliability concerns.
- Identify root causes of equipment failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Monitor equipment condition and recommend repairs, rebuilds, replacements, or capital improvements.
Safety and Compliance
- Lead maintenance activities in accordance with SMS safety policies, customer requirements, OSHA regulations, and applicable environmental standards.
- Conduct pre-job planning and ensure appropriate hazard assessments, lockout/tagout procedures, permits, and personal protective equipment are used.
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, incident investigations, and corrective-action processes.
- Ensure oils, fuels, batteries, tires, chemicals, and other materials are stored and disposed of properly.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least five years of progressively responsible experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel equipment, industrial machinery, or similar equipment.
- Prior experience leading mechanics, technicians, or maintenance employees.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, brakes, steering, and preventive maintenance practices.
- Basic computer skills, including email, work-order systems, spreadsheets, and maintenance records.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in awkward positions.
- Frequently use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding or cutting equipment.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with appropriate assistance or lifting equipment.
- Maintain the visual, hearing, and physical capabilities necessary to safely inspect, diagnose, and repair equipment.
Work Environment
This position works primarily in a steel mill, scrap-processing, heavy-industrial, or outdoor material-handling environment. The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, dirt, grease, noise, vibration, moving machinery, mobile equipment, sharp materials, and other industrial hazards.
The position requires regular presence in the maintenance shop and operating areas. This is not solely an office or administrative management position.
Schedule and Availability
The Working Maintenance Manager must be flexible based on operational and equipment needs. The position may require early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, extended shifts, and after-hours response to critical equipment failures.
